If you want to become an expert in a certain field, do you need to have more talent or more motivation?
To haver certain knowledge of a field doesn’t necessarily mean that one is an expert in a certain field. Rather as a bonus point to be an expert, talent gives one a benefit to deal with the assignments more skillfully. However without will to pursue one’s career throughout life and motivation for that will, that extra point becomes meaningless. That is, to become an expert in profession, one should continuously be motivated, desiring for the fulfillment of a goal. In the example of history and my experience, one can see that incessant motivation enables one to achieve what it takes to be an expert.
First, let us consider one of the most famous inventors in the world, Thomas Edison. Edison, as a boy who did not get the conventional education, tried various methods to be an inventor. In his childhood, for example, he was inspired by the scene of mother duck hatching eggs and he imitated it. Despite fruitless results, he was not discouraged and later in his life his seemingly futile results lead to the significant inventions. As his famous saying “Success is a 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration” signifies, one’s efforts and more importantly motivation leading to it are the most important things to become an expert.
In my own experience, motivation was an essential factor in mastering the subject. As a person who had a talent in mathematics and interest in social science, I was inspired to think of society , people and their relationships. Even though I liked th math because it was easier than social science, I kept occupying myself with social science due to my propensity to contemplate about it even in my free time. As a result my social science scores became much better than the math, which explains my earned aptitude in society and human relationship.
In conclusion a balance between talent and motivation is an ideal combination for individuals who want to master their fields. Yet, in a choice between innate potential and driving force behind will, motivation outshines talent, as shown in the examples of history and my own.

Is apathy a problem’s today’s society?
Many believe that apathy is beneficial for one’s privacy and as such has no potential harm in today’s society. Therefore they accept passivity as natural attitude. However in reality, such indifference can bring about many problems as can be seen in both literature and history.
Mary shelly’s novel, Frankenstein, clearly portrays how apathy can in fact lead to the disasters. A creature of Victor Frankenstein, the protagonist, typifies an individual who is victimized by an indifference and attributes it misery to the creator (whose unrequited love leads to disastrous results for both his creator and itself) A creature is abandoned by its master at the moment of its birth. To make up for dejection, it wants to love and to be loved by the world at first. It patiently learns the human customs and repays for his learning by bringing foods and lumbers secretly to the teachers. It even tries direct encounters with the “ignorant teachers”, trying best to be welcomed. Nevertheless despite its sincere efforts it makes for people, it is rejected and severely hit because of its outlooks. It eventually realizes how profound the people’s indifferences toward it. Dejected and bereft, it only seeks a vengeance to its creator by slaughtering all the people he loves. The apathy it encounters and lives with was so unbearable to it, leaving nothing but the total animosity toward the world around it.

기본설명: 제가 3학년 초부터 8월~9월까지 해왔던 활동입니다. REAL SAT라는 한국 유학생들에게 적지 않은 영향을 끼치고 있는 유학카페에서 추진하던 SAT 책 만들기였는데요, 먼저 활동을 시작할 때 들었던 말이 카페 운영자 분께서 유학생이 증가함에 따라 적지 않은 로열티와 외화를 외국에 지불하고 있는 안타까운 실정에서 SAT라는 시험이 유학에 차지하는 비중이 적지 않은데도 불구하고 가장 유명하다는 SAT 책마저도 실제 SAT와는 관련 없는 부분이 포함되어 있어 학생들에게 효율적으로 SAT를 통달하는 방법을 가르쳐주지 못한다는 상황 때문에 이런 책을 만들게 됐다는 취지였다라고 들었어요, 실제로 한국이 수능이나 내신에 관련된 문제집은 상당히 잘 만들잖아요? 그래서 그 기술을 SAT에 적용해서 역수출을 한다면 도리어 많은 외화를 벌 수 있는 좋은 기회라고 생각하셨다고 들었습니다.
저의 활동: 저는 그 문제집 만들기에서 실제로 문제를 만드는 활동은 하지 않았구요, 실제로 SAT를 풀고 있는 학생의 입장에서 문제집에 대한 전체 FEED BACK과 문제의 방향, 문제집 이외에도 문제집관련 홈페이지 작성에 대한 의견 등 전체적으로 문제집에 대하여 학생만이 가질 수 있는 생생한 의견을 주려고 노력하였습니다. 실제로 문제집에 제 이름이 실리고 SAT 문제집을 만든다는 활동의 특성상, 활동의 속성은 인턴 활동 이었습니다. 일주일에 1번 직접 문제집을 만드는 현장에 가서 문제집을 만들고 계신 분들과 의견을 교환했고 남는 주중에도 이메일을 통하여 의견을 표현하였구요. 문제집을 만드는 분들이 모두 저와 같이 유학이라는 과정을 거친 분들이어서 많은 점들을 배울 수 있었고 사람이라는 인맥을 얻은 것도 저에게 큰 자산이 되었다고 생각합니다.

저의활동: 저는 사회부,문화부,편집부,대학부 중 대학부에 속하여 기사를 썼습니다. 제가 대학부를 택한 이유는 제가 유학반에 속해 있고 기사를 쓰면 아무래도 그 대학에 대하여 다른 시각을 가질 수 있다고 생각을 하여 쓰게 됐습니다. 총 3번에 걸쳐서 썼고 각각 Harvard, Cornell, Upenn에 대하여 썼습니다. 쓰는 과정은 주로 인터넷과 대학에서 나눠주는 팜플렛을 참고하여 썼습니다. 제가 주로 한 활동들이 Columnist, Journalist 등 기사나 칼럼을 쓰는 활동이 주가 되어서 많은 글들을 썼던 것이 제 생각을 정리하고 제 의견을 표현할 수 있는데 많은 도움이 된 것 같습니다. FUN6에서는 외고생이라는 타이틀 말고는 다른 공통점들이 없어 보이는 각기 다른 서울내 외고의 외고생들이 모여서 각자 자신의 학교에 대해서 얘기를 나누고 기사를 쓴다는 하나의 목적을 위해 노력하는 과정 하나 하나가 신선했고 재미있었습니다.

기본설명: 서울특별시립 청소년활동진흥센터에서 주관하는 외국어봉사단입니다. 외국어봉사단 인만큼 학생을 뽑는 면접에서도 영어 같은 외국어 능력을 보고 활동도 외국어를 사용하는 활동, 예를 들어 통역, 번역, 외국인 노동자에 대한 봉사를 주로 합니다.
저의활동: 1학년 때의 봉사활동을 장식했던 활동이었습니다. 저의 주요 활동은 외국인 노동자 거주하는 교회에서 의사분들이 오시면 의사분들이 말씀하는데로 약을 조제하고 처방하는 활동이었습니다. 그 외에도 번역활동, 외국인 노동자 축제, 등 여러가지 활동을 하였는데요 그중에서 가장 기억에 남는 것은 외국인 노동자 축제였습니다. 저는 타이부스를 맞게 되서 거기 계신분들의 활동도 돕고, 타이 전통안마도 받았습니다. 정말많은 외국인 노동자 분들을 봤고 그 분들의 다양한 국적들도 보고났는데요, 평소에 간접적으로만 듣곤 하는 외국인 노동자 분들의 한국 내 규모를 알게되어서 무척 놀랐고 이제 우리나라도 더 이상 단일 민족으로써의 편협성이 아니라 진정한 세계화를 위하여 지금 여기 계시는 많은 외국인 노동자분들을 포용할 수 있는 정책을 짜야겠구나 하는 생각을 하였습니다. 다양성이라는 면이랄까요. 제 시야를 넓힐 수 있는 기회가 되었던 것 같습니다.

A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community, or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you.
The meeting with new people is always an invigorating experience for me. The experience not only refreshes my mind fed up with routine, but also gives me the lessons about my life. The recent experience with unfamiliar but amiable people made me realize that the diversity means more than difference to me. The encounter with Northerners, who brought my attention to what extent diversity affected me and how I should cope with it, clearly showed that diversity can change one’s thoughts about one’s values, perspectives and life.
When I was initially taking bus to meet Satumins, the official term for the Northerners who immigrated to the South Korea, I was ambivalent: half-excited because it was fresh to meet people who had been only in textbooks and newspapers throughout my life and half-nervous because they were different; they were “foreigners” to me because I could not connect myself with them except with the fact that we have the same lineage as the textbooks of the South Korea schools always have emphasized. That difference seemed to divide me and them like the 38-line still exists between us.
As I took off the bus outside the Seoul which looked like a rural country and walked through the unpaved road blowing with wind which softly embraces the tense atmosphere, I felt somewhat relieved. After all, I got enough experience and education for this meeting. I had met various kinds of people including foreign workers who also immigrated to the Korea for living, orphans and the old who had had hardship in their lives. And also especially for this volunteer work, I got special lesson about the Satumins’ backgrounds: their former lives in the north, routes of the escape and their future after the education in Hanawon twice. As far as concerning the theoretical aspects, I was fully ready to espouse the Satumins.
When I arrived at the building surrounded with the nature, however, it did not take long to realize that I was not ready; not because they were so exotic that I could not understand them ,but because they were perfectly normal. They looked like the rural farmers. In our first meeting they said hello to me first even though they were not my mentees (We, the voluntary workers use the term ‘mentor’ and ‘mentee’ because we believe that we are not teaching them, but guiding their lives in the South), always used the honorific expressions (they were always older than I), enjoyed strolling across the surrounding forests in their free time, and smiled really brightly when they got comfort in their liberties. We had the perfectly disparate backgrounds, but I was attracted to them. Something in their dispositions and atmospheres made me even more want to know about them, even though I could not clearly know what it is.
One day, the incident that enlightened me about ‘something’ came. After the class time was gone, I was outside sitting at the bench and looking at the Satumins playing basketball. I wanted to join them. In the class time, I could impart my knowledge but they did not include me in their conversation. I wanted to know more about them.’. I made known my basic knowledge about the basketball and A anonymous person (I cannot expose their names outside the Hanawon because it can be quite dangerous to the families in the North of the anonymous person) namely Chulsoo became so friendly to me that we spent times left after the class talking about each other’s past, present and future. We promised to get in touch with each other after his settlement in the South.
In the process of this interaction I came to believe that diversity has more meaning than difference; diversity was something that could be embraced and cherished with mutual respect. I realized that when we truly tried to acknowledge each other with sincere heart, diversity creates harmonious relationship blossoming life-long amity.

SAT Assignment
As the first post, I will update my draft for the Sat Essay. I'm sorry but SAT Reasoning test is this week, so I can't help it. -_-

Like the other media, television has its own advantages and disadvantages.
People who cling to the positive aspects of television claim that it shows the world other than our own, expanding the scope of neighborhood and apprising the common interests. However, others insist that television isolated people instead of bringing them together. In my opinion, television is not a positive tool for one’s relationship with the people. Even though it gives us a lot of information and offers a vicarious experience, it separated the individuals from the real world, triggering apathies in the world.
In my school life, television was one of the main topics of my gossip with friends. Animation on air, TV stars who showed wonderful performances and our favorite talk show were all the wonderful sources for our talk. TV presented a common background for us and as it consisted of almost all talks, I and my friends spent a lot of time watching it. However gradually television, once a connecting mechanism of my friendships, was not just a tool; it became my hobby, my whole attention taker, and pastime friend. As a natural consequence, I became reluctant to pass time with my friends, thinking about today's TV contents and anticipating the time to watch it. Once a tool for my friendship and my social connection, TV became a sole friend of mine.
At first television surely did show me a lot. An exotic nation I have never heard of, today's fashion trend in the world and story of the poor girl showed dreams come true. She became a world-famous world star. Everything was in it and I felt satisfied. I thought that The time spent with TV was invaluable to me. It was a window I see through the world around me. However I sometimes wanted to talk; I wanted to express my feelings and my opinions on my favorite subjects, but I couldn't. A window which was endless in talking about the world was closed to my opinions. The more I wanted to say about me, the more impenetrable the gaps between me and the world. From that moment, I tried to become closer to my former best friends, but got through hard times. I, who thought that I knew much about the world and its essences, completely forgot to get along with friends, make a good impression and care for others' feelings, which TV never taught me. Even though I managed to revive my former relationships, I went through such hard times to mend it.
In conclusion it is hard to say that TV has no advantages at all; it surely can serve as a substitute for real experience and also give us fun. Yet by narrowing the opportunities to meet the real world, it alienates the people, making impossible the real face to face relationships as can be seen in my own experience. Instead of heeding whole attention to TV, it is necessary to make a real contact with people, who can share one’s feelings, opinions and everything

Like the other media, television has its own advantages and disadvantages.
People who cling to the positive aspects of television claim that it shows the world other than our own, expanding the scope of neighborhood and apprising the common interests. However, others insist that television isolated people instead of bringing them together. In my opinion, television is not a positive tool for one’s relationship with the people. Even though it gives us a lot of information and offers a vicarious experience, it separated the individuals from the real world, triggering apathies in the world.
In my school life, television was one of the main topics of my gossip with friends. Animation on air, TV stars who showed wonderful performances and our favorite talk show were all the wonderful sources for our talk. TV presented a common background for us and as it consisted of almost all talks, I and my friends spent a lot of time watching it. However gradually television, once a connecting mechanism of my friendships, was not just a tool; it became my hobby, my whole attention taker, and pastime friend. As a natural consequence, I became reluctant to pass time with my friends, thinking about today's TV contents and anticipating the time to watch it. Once a tool for my friendship and my social connection, TV became a sole friend of mine.
